Keeping Your Finances Safe While Traveling

financial safety

This time of year, the landscape of Minnesota consists of slushy roads coated in a thin layer of salt, morning temperatures so cold that you can see your breath, and a mixture of dull grey skies and extremely bright sunlight.

But most of all, it’s cold.

If you’re planning on escaping the Midwestern chill by going on a vacation, we can’t say that we blame you. But while you’re packing your suitcases full of swim suits and sunscreen, don’t forget about your finances.

Traveling away from your bank, whether it’s a state or an entire country away, can leave your finances vulnerable and subject to miscommunication if you are not careful. But don’t stress too much — it all comes down to planning ahead.

At Heritage, with help from the Independent Community Bankers of America, we’re here to offer some tips so that you jetsetters can get on your way without worry.

  • Tell your bank that you are traveling, and for how long. Amidst the bustle of vacation preparation, this step can get easily forgotten. Giving your bank the heads up on your travel plans will prevent holds on your account or rejected transactions.
  • Know the best way of contacting your bank. It is important to have your bank’s phone number and contact information saved and with you while you travel in case of emergency. This is especially pertinent if you are traveling outside of the country, because the process of contacting your bank may be different beyond the United States.
  • Monitor your charge history and account activity. Make sure to keep a close eye on your accounts and transactions, both while you travel and afterwards. Staying on top of this will ensure that nothing is unaccounted for.
  • Bring multiple cards with you. You never know when you may need a backup!
  • Know your withdraw limits ahead of time. This will mean less hassle when it comes to taking out money on the go.
